  1. Headline specifications

Canon EOS R is the latest release from Canon as February 2019 and it is the smallest full frame sensor  Camera from Canon and possible on the market at this point. It weighs only 485 grams and it is mirrorless which are slowly overtaking the world of digital cameras. Mirrorless means lighter and faster. No shutter mirror no real click sound. Just a fake shutter click.

Sensor

Canon has included a 26 mp sensor almost identical with the CANON 6d Mark II which is directly competing with from the DSLR category, which is probably going to be phased out soon…..happy me cause I just bought one. It shoots RAW and jpg, and the RAW options are limited to only the 26 MP option. Not sure why Canon did do that, no big deal here, I am just saying. It shoots maximum 5fps , so they say but this is not its best feature. I guess Canon does not to create competition to his other Camera bodies and just limits the speed on purpose. The processor if Digic 8 the latest and the greatest.

RF mount

It has a the new Canon RF mount which is different and it comes with an adaptor so you can use your canon EF and EFS lenses with it. Not sure why they could not maintain the previous mounts, but I guess the shorter distance to the sensor might have something to do with it.

ISO

ISO is 100 to 40,000 and it performs better than its DLSR broher Canon 6D Mark II. The ISO performance is fantastic, top of the class as you would expect from Canon

Swivel screen

We have fully articulated swivel screen…which folks I know this would become the new standard. I do not understand why the others don’t do it. I find the Sony articulated screen pathetic.

Video

This camera offers a 4k cropped video in 25 fps and a full HD 1920×1080 pixels, if 50p. The quality of the footage is top but there are some limitations, to be discussed later

  • physical features

TOP

  • As the smallest full frame sensor, Canon tried to remove as many buttons as possible and reduce the amount of clutter. This came with few compromises, but you cannot have everything. The whole idea is to be small.
  • Top left on and off dial, flash hot shoe, shooting mode dial, a video button which is nice (not like the DLSR with the video button at the back. It makes sense i guess.
  • We have 2 dials to go though the menu, a top one and a back on, plus a lock in button.
  • Last M- function button and the shutter

Back – swivel screen, high quality, and few buttons as you need: Autofocus back button, star button, zoom button, Quick settings button in the middle of the menu wheel, info, play and delete. They are well designed and feel good in the hand

Left we have got the cabled remote control, which is the same for smaller DSLR – small jack in comparison with the 3 pin connection for the larger DSLR’s

We have Microphone 3.5 mm jack and also a nice feature is ear phone jack – a good option to have for the video shooter, but I would say a must have, as there is no sound bar display on the back screen allowing you to monitor sound. This is a bit letdown from my side.

Last but not least HDMI and USB port that allows you to charge the batter via USB

Bottom we have the battery and card compartment. I would say that having the card inside the batter compartment is a nuisance to me as I need to change card frequently and I need to remove camera from the tripod head to do it.

I just want to point out a small detail. The 2 small holes are for sound. The camera can record sound very well, in the context. The quality of sound is very good within reason. Almost as good as a shot gun mic, when no significant ambient noise – sound test…….

  • Menu Options

In regards to the menu, let’s go quickly thru it. I am sure this might be a bit dry and boring but interesting for someone looking seriously to purchase.

Left to right…..

A couple of things I have noticed, interesting enough.

  • You can do timelapse photography or you can have a 4k video at the end as a individual file. A nice addition to the Canon family, something that Panasonic had for a while now
  • Manual focus zebra – (not as good as Panasonic but nice to have
  • In camera HDR photos – impressive sharpness. set up the steps and the type and shoot
  • Very interesting is the fact you can set up the 3rd RF lens wheel to take over some functions. I guess this comes from the fact that the camera is designed to be as small as possible.
  • Photo test: –

Let’s take some photos of Tracy and compare with the Canon 6D Mark II in my possession which has the high quality as you would expect from any Canon full frame sensor.

But let’s test the sharpness and probably the ISO capability.

As a reminder the best test are for the performance in the works conditions

  • Video test

The quality of the footage is impressive also in comparison with Panasonic

  •  Pros:

This is an awesome quality camera. With the current features, it competes easy with everything above canon 6D Mark II.

It is light, that means travel is easier. Being light is the selling point that will make me buy this camera

Full sensor will give you the best quality photos. As good as it gets

High ISO performance

Uses both EF and EFS lenses which opens up infinite possibilities. I would like to note that EF lenses maintain the 1:1 cropping factor, a 24 mm is 24 mm in reality. EFS lenses will maintain the 1:6 crop factor though, even this is a full frame sensor – so a 10 mm will be a 16 mm. I don’t understand why and how, maybe someone can help me here. I guess Cropping is from the lens already and sensor is not responsible for it.

Footage quality is awesome. If you are not pretentious video shooter this is more than enough. You have full HD is 50 p and 4K in 25 pm, I would say, this suffice even for someone like me which shoots regularly. The size will overcome this issue.

Sound quality is very good. Of course one needs professional micriphones for specific tasks, but just to take some basic vide is enough.

  • Cons:

There are few compromises with this camera. Maybe they are not deal breakers but definitely got me thinking

  • No RAW at half size. You either shoot 26MB or not. Not intermediary lower RAW resolution\
  • Limited battery life – only 250 shots estimated
  • New CR3 format – need to update all software.
  • No control over the video settings. There are only 3 video mode selections. Automatic, manual and HDR. In manual mode you have limited options to control the video settings
  • 4k is only 25 p and it is cropped
  • No sound bar on the back LCD screen
  • Viewfinder is only electronic 0 harsh on my eye, but it is a personal issue.
  • As you get camera closer to the face m the display switches off. It makes sense if you hold the camera in your hands but not if you use it with stabiliser. The problem is that you cannot change this setting from menu. This becomes a problem later
  • Microphone jack is in the way of swivel screen. Not sure why Canon cannot do any better. Take Panasonic for example, they managed to the design this better and the sound cable is not in the way.
  • SD card together with the battery is an inconvenience for me as I need to remove the camera from the tripod to have access to the card
  • Battery is small and it will not last too long. If you want to the extensive shooting you need a batter pack, several batteries at hand. It is not like the DLSR you can shoot forever. Especially if used for videos , you battery will drain very quickly.
  • If you have already a wireless remote from Canon, it won’t work.
  • The available RF lenses are large and heavy and will shift the centre of gravity towards the front – so not to well balanced.

None of the above are deal breakers, but small issues that can be overcome with a bit of effort.

Conclusions,

Even if I listed few compromises already, this is an outstanding camera to have. The price point is fair for what it is and from my perspective this is the best way to enter the full frame sensor market.

Outstanding quality, I am sure this matches the highest and the most expensive DSLR in regards to photos. A lot of video missing features, this camera is probably better for photography. Still can do awesome video m but you need to add few accessories.

Obviously you need to consider what is the most important feature for you, before investing money.

I would be happy to add this to my collection of cameras, and have it with me all the time. I would love to have a 24-70 mm flat lens to turn this from a scary big camera to something discreet to take awesome pictures in public without attracting to much attention
